Java JDK 6.0 and Eclipse for Linux Download and Installation Instructions

Downloading the Java software

If you want to use the Java JDK with the Eclipse Integrated Development Environment (IDE) you will need to download each component separately and install them.

Go to the Sun's "Java SE Downloads" page (link provided below) and click on the link labeled "JDK 6". This will take you to the Download page that lists the platforms this package is available for. Before you can proceed with the download you must click on the "Accept License Agreement" radio button. Then you can click on the download link for your Linux file. After clicking on the link, the download should begin automatically. This download is approximately 59 Megabytes long.

Installing the Java Software

After downloading the Java SDK software bundle, the installation instructions for this package can be found on the Sun Developer Network here.

Downloading the Eclipse IDE

Go to the Eclipse Project Download Page and locate the link for the "Latest Release" (which should be at the top of the list of downloads). The latest release, as of September 21, 2006 was 3.2.1. Click on this link to go to the downloads page for this release. Find the link in the "Eclipse SDK" list for your Linux platform, and click on that link. This should take you to a list of mirrors which have your selected software. Choose a mirror closest to you and click on the link. It shouldn't matter whether you choose an HTTP or FTP link. Your software download should begin automatically.

Installing the Eclipse IDE

The Eclipse IDE is delivered as a ".gzip" compressed file containing a ".tar" archive of the Eclipse IDE Java program files. Installation is accomplished by simply unzipping and untarring the archive.
